Setting up the survey flow of a monadic block

You can determine how questions and stimuli within a monadic block are displayed to respondents by configuring the following monadic block settings.

Randomise order of questions

Check the tickbox beside the randomise order of questions setting to display the questions within the monadic block in a random order for each respondent. This helps minimise potential bias due to question order.

Specify the maximum number of questions and stimuli per respondent

By default, the maximum number of questions per respondent and maximum number of stimuli per respondent are left blank to display all questions and stimuli in the block to all respondents. If you enter a number, e.g. 2, in either field, each respondent will only see two randomly selected questions or stimuli out of the available questions or stimuli in the block. Please note that due to the random selection process, it is not guaranteed that each question or stimulus will be shown to an exactly equal number of respondents.

Specify the sequence generation order

Conjointly offers two options for the order in which sequence generation and display logic for stimuli are applied:

1. Recommended: Resolve display logic for each stimulus first, then generate the stimuli sequence.
2. Generate the stimuli sequence first, then resolve display logic for the selected stimuli.

Conjointly recommends the first option because the second option risks respondents seeing fewer or even no stimuli from a block if the selected stimuli are hidden by display logic.

For example, consider a monadic block set to display only one out of two available stimuli, where the first stimulus has conditional display logic. If the sequence is generated with the first stimulus, but the display logic prevents it from being displayed, respondents will not see any stimuli from that block. To avoid this issue, it’s best to resolve display logic before generating the sequence for the remaining stimuli.

Determine the sequence of questions

This option lets you choose between:

• Sequential testing: Ask all questions for one stimulus before proceeding to the next stimulus.
• Random monadic: Ask the same question for all stimuli before proceeding to the next question.
• A special funky sequence(for advanced users only).

You can check the sequence of questions asked in a monadic block by simply clicking on Review sequence of questions as demonstrated below:

You can observe the exact sequence of stimuli and questions that respondents will be projected through the survey procedure.

Applying conditional display logic to stimuli or questions within the monadic block

You may also set up display logic for stimuli or questions within a monadic block to display them conditionally based on other information, such as answers to previous questions in the survey, GET variables, or conditions based on stimuli.

Example 1: Displaying a stimulus based on certain conditions

Suppose that you have multiple stimuli/SKUs in a monadic block and wish to select which stimuli/SKUs to display to a certain respondent based on certain conditions (such as location, income, etc), you can do so by editing the display logic for stimuli:

1. On the monadic block, click on Edit display logic for stimuli .
2. Select the stimulus you want to display conditionally.
3. Specify the rules of condition for the stimulus.
4. To apply display logic to another stimulus, just repeat steps 2 and 3 with the respective stimulus.

In the example below, the stimuli were set up for display based on the answers to the previous question.

Example 2: Displaying a question based on the answers to previous questions

In the following example, the display logic for the comparative price expectation question was configured so that respondents are shown this question only if they select 5 (would definitely buy the product) in the purchase intent question.

Follow these steps to set up the display logic for the question:

1. Click on the Edit display logic of this question button and select Add a new condition .
2. Select Condition based on answers to previous questions .
3. Choose the base question from the list. In this example, the purchase intent question was selected.
4. Select stimulus. Choose same as this question to display the question based on the response to the same stimulus in the previous question.
5. Specify the rule and value of the response. In this example, equal and 5 are selected.

Respondents will see the comparative price expectation question only if they select 5 in the purchase intent question.

Example 3: Displaying a question based on the sequence order of stimuli

In the following example, the introductory text for the second product concept should only be shown when the second stimulus is presented to the respondents.

You can follow the steps below to apply the conditional display based on the sequence order of stimuli:

1. Click on the Edit display logic of this question button and select Add a new condition .
2. Select Condition based on stimuli .
3. Select sequence order of stimuli.
4. Specify the rule and value of the stimuli. In this example, equal and 2 are selected.

Respondents will see the second introductory text after completing the questions on the first stimuli.

Example 4: Displaying a question for specific stimuli only

In the following example, the slider question about the optimal mix of green and red apples is relevant only to apple juice. Follow these steps to set up the conditional display logic for the question:

1. Click on the Edit display logic of this question button and select Add a new condition .
2. Select Condition based on stimuli .
3. Select Current question stimulus.
4. Select the desired rule and value. In this example, the rule and value are selected to ensure that the question is shown only for Apple juice.

The question is only shown to respondents when answering questions about apple juice.
